Shortlease, car rental or long-term lease?

For stays of 1 month to a few years, shortlease is usually the best fit: a flexible car subscription for expats, with one all-inclusive monthly rate. Rental is easy for a few days, while a long-term lease locks you in for years.

Expat FAQ

Every question expats ask us, answered before you sign.

Can I lease a car as an expat?

+

Yes. You need a valid driving licence, ID and proof of your address in the Netherlands. See the documents checklist above.

Can I lease if I have just arrived?

+

Yes. You can apply before you are registered with a municipality or have a BSN. We only need the 4 documents from the checklist.

Do I need a BSN (citizen service number)?

+

No, a BSN is not required to apply.

Do I need a Dutch address?

+

Yes. We need an address in the Netherlands where we can deliver the car, such as your temporary housing, your office, or your rental apartment or house.

Do I need a Dutch bank account?

+

No. You can pay with iDEAL or Wero, or by bank transfer from a European bank account. Credit card payments are not possible.

Can I use my foreign driving licence?

+

An EU or EEA licence is valid in the Netherlands until it expires. A licence from outside the EU and EEA is generally valid for 185 days after you register with a Dutch municipality; after that you may need to exchange it. Your licence must be valid throughout your lease.

What is the minimum age?

+

There is no fixed minimum age, but age is part of our acceptance check. For drivers under 24, the excess is €150 higher.

Do I need a Dutch employment contract?

+

Yes. As an expat, you need to be employed in the Netherlands to be eligible. You do not have to share your contract with us, but most expats do, because it is an easy way to prove both employment and address.

Can I lease with a temporary employment contract?

+

Yes. Choose a minimum term that fits the length of your contract. Not sure? Choose a shorter term. After your minimum term, the lease continues on a flexible basis with 1 week's notice.

Can I lease if I am self-employed?

+

Yes. We ask for a Chamber of Commerce (KvK) extract.

Can my employer pay for the lease?

+

Yes. We can put the contract and invoices in your employer's name. Note: a car paid for by your employer may count as a company car for Dutch tax purposes. Ask your employer or tax adviser.

How far ahead should I arrange my lease?

+

Ideally 1 to 2 weeks before you need the car. With your documents ready, delivery can be as fast as 1 working day, depending on availability.

Can I choose an automatic car?

+

Yes, we have a wide range of automatic cars, and electric cars are always automatic. Not sure if the car you want is an automatic? Mention it in your quote request.

What does delivery cost and where do you deliver?

+

We deliver to any home or work address in the Netherlands for €90 excl. VAT (btw in Dutch). We do not deliver to airports. Collecting the car from our location is free.

What is the deposit and when do I get it back?

+

The deposit is 2 times your monthly rate excl. VAT, with a minimum of €1,000 for private shortlease. We confirm the amount by phone once you are accepted. We aim to refund it within 7 to 14 days after you return the car, minus any open costs such as fines or damage.

Where do I find the driver's manual?

+

Scan the QR code on your windscreen to open your driver's manual.

What does the insurance cover, and what is the excess?

+

You have comprehensive insurance (WA + casco, also called all-risk), which covers damage to your own car and to others. The excess is €350 per claim, or €500 for electric cars and cars from class F upwards.

What do I do if the car is damaged?

+

Take photos, then report the damage to us within 48 hours. If another party is involved, always fill in a European Accident Statement (in Dutch: schadeformulier) together with them.

What do I do after an accident or in an emergency?

+

If anyone is injured or in danger, call 112 first. Then follow the steps in your driver's manual.

The car has a breakdown. Who do I call?

+

Call the VWP Shortlease breakdown service straight away. You will find the phone number in your driver's manual.

How do traffic fines work?

+

Fines are sent to us as the registered owner. We pay them and charge them to you, plus an administration fee of €14.50 per fine.

Can someone else drive the car?

+

Yes. Additional drivers are allowed at no extra cost, as long as we have received their driving licence beforehand. They must meet the same requirements as you.

Can I drive abroad?

+

Yes, with restrictions. Countries outside Europe, including Morocco, Tunisia and Turkey, are not allowed: our insurance does not cover them. Eastern Europe (for example Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovenia, Hungary and Croatia) is allowed, but a different excess may apply. Notify our insurance department at least 1 week before you travel. If you don't, or do so too late, you may be charged the full cost of any damage, theft, repair or replacement.

What if I drive more kilometres than agreed?

+

The rate for extra kilometres depends on your car. You will find it on our website and in your lease agreement. In your first month, you can adjust your mileage allowance for free.

Can I extend my lease or switch cars?

+

Yes. Contact our lease advisers: call +31 546 714 417 or email verkoop@vwpshortlease.nl.

How do I cancel?

+

Cancel your shortlease via our service page. We then schedule a pick-up or return date, and you receive further instructions by email.

How do I return the car?

+

We pick the car up at your address for €90 excl. VAT, or you return it to our location in Nijverdal for free. Remove your belongings and follow the return protocol (inname protocol) that you receive in the week before your return.

How is the car inspected when I return it?

+

You can read exactly how the inspection works on our return process page.

What is on my final invoice?

+

Your final invoice shows any remaining rent, extra kilometres, fines, damage that does not count as normal wear and tear, and excesses. You can find what counts as normal wear and tear in our return protocol.

When do I get my deposit back?

+

We aim to refund your deposit within 7 to 14 days, minus any costs on your final invoice.

What if I have to leave the Netherlands suddenly?

+

After your minimum term, you can cancel with 1 week's notice. If you leave during your minimum term, contact us and we will look for a solution together.
