Urban, flexible, and electric
With VWP's microcar short-term lease, you'll be on the road in no time in a suitable electric microcar. These compact urban microcars are not only ideal for city driving, but also contribute to a greener future.

What is a microcar?
A microcar is a compact, lightweight four-wheeled vehicle that can travel at a maximum speed of 45 kilometers per hour. You can drive one from the age of 16 if you have an AM driver's license, the same license you need for a scooter. Because a microcar is legally considered a moped, the rules are less strict than for a car: for example, you do not need a B driver's license and the road tax is lower.
Microcars are particularly popular for short trips within the city or village, such as shopping or visiting family. They offer the protection and comfort of a small car, but with the convenience and accessibility of a scooter. In short: a microcar is a practical and accessible way to drive independently and comfortably.
Leasing a microcar
At VWP Shortlease, you can lease electric microcars, such as the Citroën Ami, Opel Rocks, and Fiat Topolino. These compact vehicles are perfect for urban mobility and have flexible leasing options.
Short-term lease is a form of leasing where you are not tied to a long contract. You can lease for as little as one month, with all-inclusive rates that cover maintenance, insurance and road tax (full operational lease). This offers flexibility without major financial obligations, ideal for both corporate if private users.
The rates start around €205 per month, depending on the model, the duration, and the number of kilometers. It is also possible to take advantage of temporary promotional rates on selected models!

Questions about microcars
Answered for you right away!
A microcar, not to be confused with a disabled vehicle, belongs on the road for cars and not on the bike path. Motorways are therefore off-limits for microcars. However, you are allowed to drive them on an 80 km/h road, provided there is no C9 traffic sign. This is the sign with a tractor, bicycle, and moped on it, which makes it clear that slow traffic is not welcome there.
Here are the most important rules for microcars in traffic:
- Within built-up areas: Microcars are permitted to drive on roads where cars and other vehicles are also permitted. However, they are not permitted on bicycle paths.
- Outside built-up areas: They are only allowed on roads with a speed limit of 80 km/h or less, and not on highways or motorways. In practice, this often means that they are only allowed on roads with a lower speed limit (e.g., 60 km/h roads).
Pay attention to traffic signs: sometimes microcars are explicitly prohibited on certain roads, even within these rules. If you are unsure, it is wise to check your route in advance or ask your local authority for advice.
To drive a microcar in the Netherlands, you need at least an AM driver's license. This is the same license required for a moped, scooter, or motorized bicycle.
Exceptions
- If you already have a B driver's license (car driver's license), you do not need a separate AM driver's license. The B driver's license automatically covers the AM category.
- You can obtain an AM driver's license from your 16th birthday, which means that microcars are an accessible option for young drivers who are not yet eligible to obtain a driver's license.
You can obtain an AM driver's license by passing a theory exam and, depending on the category chosen (moped or microcar), a practical exam. The AM4 category applies specifically to microcars.
Please note: you are not allowed to drive a microcar without a driver's license. It is therefore important to meet this requirement in order to legally drive on the road.
An urban car is a vehicle specifically designed for city driving. These cars are compact, maneuverable, and often equipped with features that make driving in busy, tight urban environments easier.
They are popular with people who make a lot of short trips, live in urban areas, and have little need for a large or powerful car.
If you use a microcar for business purposes, we have good news for you! These compact vehicles fall under the 0% additional tax liability scheme! But what does that actually mean, and how can you benefit from it?
If you use a company car for private purposes, you will be taxed on this. This is called additional tax liability, and the percentage depends on the value of the vehicle and how environmentally friendly it is. For the most sustainable vehicles, such as electric microcars, an additional tax liability percentage of 0% applies. This means that you will not incur any additional costs if you also use your microcar for private purposes.
